Weibo MAUs up 40.8%, WeChat up 36%
Despite the apparent decrease in usage of microblogs among Chinese Internet users, Weibo saw an increase in the monthly active users (MAUs) last year. In December 2014, the number was 175.7 million, up 36 percent year-on-year, or up 5.2 percent from Q3. The data is provided in Weibo’s Q4 earnings report, which was released in March.
In comparison, WeChat’s Q4 earnings report shows the latest MAU figure of 500 million, up 40.8 percent from 355 million at the end of 2013, or up 6.8 percent from Q3. The company did not release data regarding the locations of users, but it would appear that growth has not really caught on beyond the mainland Chinese market.
